VANCOUVER – Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada and MP for Saanich–Gulf Islands, will launch her Green Train national rail tour with a rally in Vancouver this Friday evening
“We are travelling by rail across Canada to raise awareness of both the crisis facing Canadian democracy, and the crisis facing our rail system,” said the Green Leader.
“This tour is about Sir John A. Macdonald’s vision of a nation united from coast to coast both by a railway and by our shared democratic values. It’s about inspiring Canadians to think like a country once again.”
On the Green Train, May will join Green Party members, candidates and supporters from across Canada for the journey from Vancouver to the Party’s 2014 Convention in Fredericton, taking place July 18-20.
Whistle-Stop rallies will be held in communities along the way, including Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto and Montreal. Green MP Bruce Hyer will board the train in Armstrong, Ontario.
“I’m very proud to have launched the successful Save Maritime Rail whistle stop tour to save VIA’s Halifax-to-Montreal line back in February,” said Hyer, the Green Party Deputy Leader and MP for Thunder Bay–Superior North. “Now with the Green Train, we will bring our message to the whole country – It’s time to get our democracy and our rail system back on track.”
At the rally on Friday evening, May will be joined by Vancouver Green Councillor Adriane Carr and local Green Party supporters. The rally will begin at 6:00 PM Pacific, and will take place in Thornton Park, across Station St. from Pacific Central Station.
