Earth Day (April 22nd) is an international day promoting environmentally sustainable and responsible practices and actions. The goals of the event are to encourage the public to take action in raising awareness of the environmental issues that confront us day to day, and what we can do to decrease our environmental footprint.

Earth Day provides the opportunity for positive actions and results.

In 1990, two million Canadians joined 200 million people in 141 nations in celebrating the first International Earth Day. In many countries, the global event brought pressure on heads of state to take part in the UN Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro to address issues such as climate change and the world wide loss of species.

In Canada, Earth Day has grown into Earth Week and even Earth Month to accommodate the profusion of events and projects.

Earth Day Canada was a recent winner of the top environmental education award in North America for its innovative programs and educational resources. The Outstanding Service to Environmental Education by an Organization award was presented to EDC by the Washington-based North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE), the world's largest association of environmental educators, with members in over 55 countries.

7th Generation Walk for Mother Earth

"This is the Sixth Annual, 7th Generation Walk for Mother Earth. The concept of the walk originated with three Indigenous women, Judy Da Silva, Betty Catchaway and Chickadee Richard. Their vision was to have communities from all four directions conduct a community sacred walk into Winnipeg from places as far away as Grassy Narrows, Ontario (about an hour drive north of Kenora). They walked as a prayer for the earth and the generations to come. They told us that if we always think ahead to how our actions will impact as far as 7 generations ahead, we will make the decisions that will protect the earth for the generations to come." (source)
