Ardythe Basham, Green Party of Manitoba candidate for Wolseley

An early baby-boomer born in Manitoba, I have lived here all my life except

for my time in graduate school and study abroad for my Ph.D. in History (University of British Columbia).

My husband Robert and I have lived in Wolseley for over 20 years. Our sons, Andrew and Stephen, grew up here and attended Laura Secord School. Andrew is a graduate of the University of Winnipeg in Ecological Studies, and Stephen is a graduate in Fine Arts from the University of Manitoba. My husband is retired from Wawanesa Insurance.

I have been an active volunteer in several community organizations, including Laura Secord when my children attended there, Robert A. Steen Community Centre, Friends of the Cornish Library, and the Wolseley Residents' Association. I was named Volunteer of the Year at R.A. Steen in 1998 and edited the R.A. Steen newsletter for several years until 2006.

I initiated the R.A. Steen Millennium project, Rising to the Occasion: A community history of Wolseley, West Broadway, and Armstrong's Point, and saw it through to publication. My connection to the community continued through my position as a member-at-large of the R.A. Steen board, and activity in the Wolseley Residents' Association. I have recently taken a back seat at R. A. Steen and the WRA but continue to be available as a volunteer. I have also helped out with Doors Open at the Cornish Library in 2008, and with Jane's Walk in 2008 and 2009.

As a Friend of the Cornish Library, I assisted with the preparation of our submission to City Council on the PUFS report, and helped prepare the Cornish history booklet, Leafing Through Our History. I am presently active in River City Toastmasters and Daytimers Toastmasters and am assisting two other Toastmaster clubs.

Green Party of Manitoba policy is guided by the Ten Principles for a Sustainable Society. Two of those principles call for a) stronger, more participatory democracy and b) local control. We believe that the people most affected by a situation must have the authority to solve it because distant administrations cannot respond adequately. We support a restructuring of social, political and economic institutions to a democratic, less bureaucratic system where power is returned to local communities.
