Press Conference regarding the proposed road through Grass River Provincial Park
August 19, 2009

-James Speaking at Press Conference
The Province of Manitoba is proposing to build a Logging Road through the middle of Grass River Provincial Park, just two months after enacting the Forest Amendment Act which bans Commercial Forestry Activity in all Provincial Parks!
In response to this outrageous proposal, a joint News Conference was held on August 19 between the Western Canada Wilderness Committee, the Green Party of Manitoba, the Liberal Party of Manitoba, and Manitoba Wildlands.

Leader's Message: I want to be Pesticide Free!
It is clear which way the wind is blowing, and
it is even more apparent that we do not want to
be downwind in a gust of pesticide fumes.

GPM helps Maki family to keep their chickens
November 13, 2009
The
Green Party of Manitoba (GPM) was among many parties whom successfully urged
the RM and Council of Lac Du Bonnet to use their discretion and allow Alison
and Jeremy Maki, to keep the fourteen chickens that are living free range on
their property contrary to municipal by-laws.
The
Maki's are raising these birds as pets and egg producers. They also grow their own vegetables and
harvest their own maple syrup. "We
want to be self-sufficient. We want to teach our children how to live green."
Alison told the Lac Du Bonnet Leader late last week.
"The simple fact
that these people are choosing to raise animals and producing food in the
confines of their property is simply a forward thinking example of environmental
responsibility.", wrote GPM Leader James Beddome in an e-mail to the Reeve and
Council of the RM.

Greyhound Considers Termination of Intercity Public Transportation in Manitoba
September 07, 2009
The Green Party of Manitoba [GPM] is deeply dismayed that Manitobans may
lose access to bus service between communities, and is calling on the Governments of Manitoba and
Canada to do everything that is necessary to ensure that Manitoba's intercity public transportation
remains in operation.

H1N1 Outbreak Raising Concerns
July 07, 2009
In light of the current outbreak of H1N1 influenza, or Swine 'Flu, the Green Party of Manitoba is calling for an immediate halt to the development of any new confined animal feeding operations, or "CAFOs," in the province. Large numbers of hogs and chickens are fed in these facilities, also referred to as "factory farms." The Government of Manitoba has allowed the development of many such operations, especially in the southeast and central areas.

Ban Plastic Bags
April 21, 2009
"Inaction is not an option." asserted Beddome, "The proliferation of plastics in the past fifty years has
led to problems such as the continent-sized islands of garbage swirling around in our oceans with the
resultant plastic all to often being ingested by marine wildlife. Close to home, our fences and trees are
often littered with plastic bags. Additionally it is becoming increasingly clear that when this plastic
finally does beak down it leaches toxins harming both the health of the planet and human health.
Hopefully the Legislature takes this matter seriously, quits stalling and looks beyond petty party
politics."

Implement a province-wide ban on the Cosmetic use of Pesticides
April 19, 2009
In celebration of Earth Day we, the Green Party of Manitoba, are calling on the Manitoba Government to take action on the proliferation of pesticides (including herbicides, pesticides, fungicides and other chemicals) that are compromising the health of Manitoba's populace, its wildlife, and the health of the planet in general.

Please note, being a member of the Green Party of Canada does not automatically include a membership with the Green Party of Manitoba; these are two different organizations. Contact our

WE NEED YOU!
The Green Party of Manitoba urgently requires the research efforts of its members, and of anyone who supports the party's direction on sustainability and "quality of life" issues. GPM members are currently conducting a phone-around to establish working research groups for a number of critical areas.
High on the list of research concerns for our members and other Green supporters are:
- Organic farming, urban gardening, pesticides & soil issues.
- Urban transit & transportation technology.
- Pork production & the environment.
- International politics of the transition to global sustainability.
- Poverty, housing & the welfare system.
- Water quality, incl. Lake Winnipeg & Red River basin issues.
If you or someone you know — not necessarily a GPM member — would like to participate in researching any of these issues, please get in touch with the phone-around co-ordinator, Les Mundwiler, at 943-5668 (afternoons) or
.
The Green Party of Manitoba is calling on the Province of Manitoba to follow the lead of Quebec and Ontario in banning the cosmetic use of pesticides
Please help us by contacting Minister of Conservation, Stan Struthers and let him know that for the health of us all it is imperative that the province take this first step in banning the use of cosmetic pesticides.

GPM RESEARCH! . . . GREEN ACTIVISTS WILL WANT TO POST TO THE NEW RESEARCH BLOGS!
Green issues - the science and the politics - are coming steadily to the fore. They cover a big range of topics and they require constant tracking if GPM is to respond accurately, with effective policies and program objectives. In the first stages of developing research groups to meet this challenge, the GPM has now created a number of research blogs for members and other Greens: Housing & Green Construction, Social Inclusion & Poverty Reduction, Transportation, Global Relations & Climate Change, Health & Food Safety, Agriculture & Gardening, Waste Management & Recycling, Energy, Water & Forests. Each closed blog can have up to 100 participating "authors" and is expected to have one or more corresponding research groups, for occasional face-to-face discussion of research directions; but GPM members and interested Greens can now make a research contribution in any of these areas by posting directly to the relevant blog. Please contact Les Mundwiler, GPM research co-ordinator, for further information at: (204) 943-5668 or
